My take (read this like a fan)
Personally, I think it’s a smart ending if you judge it as two endings stitched together: the romance ends, the power story opens. That’s why it hits both “ahhh finally” and “wait WHAT?” at the same time.
If you like twisty mini-series, it works. If you like clean closure, it’s going to annoy you a bit — and that’s kind of the point.
